Lab Alert: Hemoglobin A1c Result Shift with New Method
The Nebraska Medical Center laboratory transitioned Hemoglobin A1c testing to the BioRad D100 platform on January 13, 2026. Analysis of patient results shows that HbA1c results are approximately 0.5% lower than the previously reported method. A full review of calibration records, quality control, method validation, and external comparisons demonstrates that these lower values are more accurate than the previous method (Trinity Premier platform). Diagnostic thresholds remain unchanged, as they are defined by the American Diabetes Association rather than instrument-specific reference studies.
To assist with clinical interpretation during this transition, please note the following key points:
The laboratory will continue ongoing quality monitoring. Physicians and clinicians are encouraged to consider intermethod variability when evaluating longitudinal HbA1c trends, particularly when comparing historical Premier results with current BioRad D100 values. Please contact the laboratory with any questions or patient-specific concerns.
