The Core Laboratory at Nebraska Medicine is a semi-automated, 24/7 laboratory service providing routine chemistry, hematology and coagulation testing for Nebraska Medicine hospitals and clinics.  The laboratory section is CAP and CLIA accredited and produces approximately 1.5 million reportable tests and panels per year.  This volume translates to roughly 5 million individual test results per year.  The average receipt to result turn-around-time for Emergency Department testing is approximately 30 minutes for most panels and assays.  The Core Laboratory is designed around lean management principles and a work cell layout to maximize efficiency.  The Sunquest SMART module and six specimen tracking monitors allow the section staff to efficiently manage throughput of STAT, ED and Oncology specimens within the high volume flow of the Core Laboratory.

The Core Laboratory also includes the Special Chemistry section, which manages more complex or esoteric testing modalities. This includes various types of electrophoresis, nephelometry, radioimmunoassay, high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.
